The BBC has named “Tujhe Dekha” from Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge as the UK’s favourite 90s Bollywood song! This iconic tune, affectionately known as DDLJ by Indians and South Asians worldwide, has won hearts across borders.

DDLJ, a timeless gem in Hindi cinema, catapulted Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol to the pinnacles of stardom, endearing them to audiences across generations.

It remains the longest-running film in Indian cinema history, continuing its daily screenings at the illustrious Maratha Mandir Theatre in Mumbai.

Listeners of BBC Asian Network were tasked with selecting The Ultimate 90s Bollywood Song from a curated list of 50 contenders.

A panel comprising the station’s esteemed presenters, including Haroon Rashid, Nikita Kanda, Gagan Grewal, and Nadia Ali, alongside industry aficionados Asim Burney, Amrita Tanna, and Karan Pangali, meticulously crafted the shortlist.

From foot-tapping dance numbers like “Ole Ole” from Yeh Dillagi to soul-stirring ballads like “Bahon Ke Darmiyan” from Khamoshi: The Musical, the competition was fierce. However, there emerged a unanimous winner: the enchanting melody of “Tujhe Dekha” from the 1995 blockbuster.
