The highly anticipated Shahid Kapoor-starrer Ashwatthama: The Saga Continues has reportedly been put on hold due to significant budget and logistical challenges.
The film, which had generated considerable excitement earlier this year, is facing setbacks, with production house Pooja Entertainment citing financial difficulties as one of the primary reasons for the delay.
Ashwatthama was initially announced by Amazon Prime Video in March 2024, with grand plans to make it one of the streaming platform’s most ambitious Indian productions.
Directed by Sachin B Ravi, the film promised to blend mythological themes with modern-day action, drawing inspiration from the legendary warrior Ashwatthama of the Mahabharata.
However, a mid-day report suggests that as pre-production progressed, the initially-set budget of over Rs 500 crore, began to spiral beyond expectations.
Shahid Kapoor Starrer Ashwatthama: The Saga Continues On HOLD?
Sources close to the production have revealed that the scale of the project was far larger than originally planned. “The project’s scale was enormous. The idea was to create something that could rival international fantasy-action films. Ashwatthama was supposed to be shot across multiple countries. But as we began working out the logistics and coordinating shoots across international locations, it became clear that staying within budget would be a serious challenge,” an insider revealed.
Additionally, Pooja Entertainment’s debt and financial issues became one of the reasons.
Shahid Kapoor had already begun intense physical training for the role, preparing to play a modern-day version of Ashwatthama. The film was set to merge mythological elements with contemporary action, aiming to create a visually spectacular experience for audiences. However, given the mounting financial pressure, the project has now been put on pause.
Shahid Shifts His Focus On Vishal Bhardwaj’s Next
Instead of focusing on Ashwatthama, Kapoor is now shifting his attention to his upcoming film with renowned director Vishal Bhardwaj.
A trade insider commented on the current market scenario: “Given the current state of the market, studios are being cautious about green-lighting mega-budget films. A project like Ashwatthama comes with a lot of risk.”
When reached out, Pooja Entertainment’s Vashu Bhagnani was unavailable to comment. He is yet to respond to inquiries regarding the film’s delay.
