Shekhar Kapur is all set to revisit one of his most beloved films with Masoom 2, the long-awaited sequel to his 1983 classic. The director recently confirmed that the script is finalised and production will begin in early 2025.
In an interview with ANI, Kapur shared an amusing tale that gave him a sense of destiny about the project. “The script is ready, and I will start shooting from February-March,” he revealed.

He then recalled a moment during his travels when he accidentally left the Masoom 2 script on a plane.
He shared, “I was travelling from Dubai to Delhi, and I realised I had left the script on the seat. But I got it back, and a flight attendant wrote me a note saying that Masoom was a very good film, and this one will be just as good. So, see, it came back even after being left behind—there must be something to it. It’s destiny.”
The sequel promises a fresh storyline but will retain the emotional depth and timeless qualities that made the original Masoom so iconic. Kapur also confirmed that the star-studded cast will include Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, Manoj Bajpayee, and Kaveri, among others.
Reflecting on the inspiration behind revisiting Masoom, Kapur said, “At that time, I was very new to the industry, a complete naïve, and I really want to know how I did it.”
Kapur Reveals His Cook Wrote Mr India 2 Script With ChatGPT
Kapur expressed his excitement about the sequel but also took time to reflect on the role of technology, especially AI, in creativity. He shared his belief that relying too much on AI could lead to laziness, as true creativity comes from human emotions like fear, love, faith, and hope. He argued that while AI can write about hope, it can’t truly experience it. Kapur also emphasised the importance of human emotions in storytelling, pointing out that AI cannot fall in love or truly feel pain.
Kapur remembered a funny incident when his cook wrote a script for Mr India 2 using ChatGPT. He was impressed by the idea and asked where it came from, only to learn that it was generated by AI. While the story was good, Kapur reflected that it showed how AI can push creativity, but if ChatGPT writes every story, it raises the question of what role humans still have in the creative process.
On his long-awaited project Paani, Kapur noted that while the film remains on hold, his focus will be on Masoom 2 for now before returning to Paani.
