The much-anticipated film Kanguva, starring Suriya and directed by Siva, hit theatres on November 14, 2024. While the film has garnered praise from some fans, it has also sparked criticism.
Viewers have particularly pointed out issues with the loud background score and the limited screen time given to certain actors, notably Disha Patani, who plays the character Angela.
Neha Gnanavel, wife of Kanguva producer KE Gnanavel Raja, addressed these concerns directly in a now-deleted tweet on X (formerly Twitter). The tweet made headlines for its blunt admission about Disha Patani’s role in the film.

Neha explained that Patani’s role was never meant to be central to the plot. She wrote, “Angela’s character isn’t the entire focus of Kanguva. She can’t dominate 2.5 hours of film! It’s basic, so yes, she was there to look pretty!!!” Her comments quickly went viral, sparking a wave of reactions from internet users.
She further defended the director’s vision and said “It’s one brain and perspective (the director) presenting to crores of audiences! We welcome criticism, not targeted propaganda.”

Despite the tweet being deleted, screenshots have continued to circulate on social media. This has intensified the ongoing debate about Patani’s limited role in the film.
Jyothika Also Defended The Film’s ‘Unacceptable’ Shortcomings Recently
This isn’t the first time those close to the film have publicly addressed the negative feedback. Suriya’s wife, actress Jyothika, also came to the film’s defence earlier.
In a post on Instagram, Jyothika expressed her surprise at the negative reviews, suggesting that other big-budget films with outdated storylines or questionable content had not received the same level of scrutiny. She pointed out that the criticisms of Kanguva were often one-sided, with positive aspects of the film largely overlooked.
Kanguva, which also stars Bobby Deol in a pivotal role, has struggled to meet box office expectations, grossing just Rs. 47 crores in its first three days of release. The film’s mixed reception has sparked conversations about its direction, performances, and overall execution.
Despite the criticism, both Neha and Jyothika have stood by the film, defending it against what they see as unfair negative attention. Now, it remains to be seen how the film will fare in the coming weeks.
