Shreya Ghoshal Feels Embarrassed By Her Item Number ‘Chikni Chameli’ Featuring Katrina Kaif For THIS Reason, Is Now Being ‘Conscious’

Chikni Chameli singer Shreya Ghoshal recently admitted feeling embarrassed when young children sing the song without understanding its meaning

Shreya Ghoshal is one of Bollywood’s most popular singers and we all admire her soulful voice and chart-topping hits. However, she recently opened up about feeling ‘embarrassed’ by her song ‘Chikni Chameli’ which was featured in the 2012 film Agneepath and picturised on Katrina Kaif. The reason is young children singing it without understanding its meaning.

In a chat with Canadian YouTuber Lilly Singh, Shreya admitted that some of her songs, including “Chikni Chameli,” fall into the category of being ‘borderline raunchy.’

Here’s What Shreya Ghoshal Said

She explained that there’s a difference between being sensuous and being objectified. Over time, she has become more conscious about the lyrics she sings, especially after witnessing little girls performing such songs.

“It’s a fun song, they are dancing to it, they come and say – Can I sing this in front of you? Then I feel very embarrassed that a little girl, who is probably 5–6 years old, is singing those lyrics. It doesn’t suit, it doesn’t sound good, I don’t want that,” she shared.

‘Chikni Chameli’ Singer Is Now Conscious While Choosing Lyrics

Shreya also mentioned that she is now more mindful of her song choices. Even if she agrees to sing a track, she prefers it to be written thoughtfully. She believes that if a woman had penned the lyrics, they might have had a more refined and graceful approach.

“Maybe if a woman were writing it, she would have written it in a very gracious manner. She can—it’s just a matter of perspective. In our society, especially in India, it is essential to set some benchmark because music and films have a huge impact on our lives,” she added.

Reflecting on the influence of Bollywood music, Shreya concluded that songs and films often become a part of history. For her, it is crucial to be mindful of the legacy she leaves behind. “I don’t want to be a part of that kind of history,” she stated.

Directed by Karan Malhotra, Agneepath was a remake of the 1990 Amitabh Bachchan starrer of the same name. The 2012 version featured Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Rishi Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, and Om Puri in key roles.
