It’s been six years since Ranveer Singh entered Rohit Shetty’s Cop Universe with Simmba, and he has since returned for other films within the franchise.
The 2018 action-comedy, based on the Telugu film Temper, marked a notable point in Ranveer’s career. While he gained attention for his portrayal of the corrupt but redeemable cop, his role became a key part of Shetty’s expanding universe.
Following Simmba, Singh appeared in Sooryavanshi (2021) and also returned in Singham Again (2024). Produced by Rohit Shetty Pictures, Dharma Productions, and Reliance Entertainment, Simmba featured actors like Sonu Sood, Sara Ali Khan, and Ajay Devgn (who made a cameo as Singham). This helped to further integrate Simmba into Shetty’s Cop Universe.
Simmba’s Story From Corrupt Cop To Hero
In Simmba, Singh played Sangram “Simmba” Bhalerao, a corrupt officer from Singham’s hometown. The character starts off living a morally questionable life until tragedy forces a change. Simmba’s admiration for Singham plays a key part in his transformation, which leads him to choose a moral path after personal loss.
Though reviews were mixed, Simmba became Singh’s highest-earning opening film in 2018, grossing around Rs 400 crore globally. This success helped solidify his place in Shetty’s Cop Universe.
The Remake Of Temper
Remaking Temper came with challenges. Rohit Shetty initially considered using just a few scenes from the original film but ultimately decided to buy the rights to the entire story to create a distinct Hindi version.
The production of Simmba faced additional delays due to Sara Ali Khan’s involvement in a lawsuit related to her debut film, Kedarnath. This legal issue briefly halted the production of Simmba, though Khan was able to complete both films after a settlement.
Will We Get A Sequel?
The Simmba franchise seems set to continue. Ranveer Singh has confirmed a sequel is in the works, saying, “It will happen, with God’s blessing.” He seems ready to continue playing Simmba, as long as Rohit Shetty is involved in making more films in the Cop Universe.
