Doosra poster sparks buzz as Sourav Ganguly rights battle intensifies over the biopic-inspired cricket drama

A courtroom clash over Sourav Ganguly’s screen legacy has now spilled straight into the face-off between Doosra and the officially sanctioned biopic Dada. In a significant order, the Delhi High Court ruled that Doosra infringed Ganguly’s personality and publicity rights, directing its makers to add prominent disclaimers and furnish a Rs 2 crore bank guarantee, even as the former India captain’s authorized big-screen story continues to move ahead separately.

Delhi High Court’s Latest Order

Justice Tejas Karia directed Doosra producer Ramesh Deo Productions Private Limited to display a prominent disclaimer in both Hindi and English at the beginning and the end of the film. The disclaimer must clearly state that Ganguly did not consent to the use of his persona in the movie and that the film has no authorization to commercially exploit or violate his personality and publicity rights.

The court also ordered the makers to furnish an unconditional bank guarantee of Rs 2 crore with the registrar within two weeks, while the disclaimer must be added within two days. The bench further clarified that any non-compliance would invite a restraint on the commercial use of the film and its related elements, including release on OTT platforms or any other form of exploitation.

Crucially, the court did not treat the dispute as something that could be fixed through a few edits. It found that the Ganguly-linked material was too closely woven into the narrative to be cleanly separated, which is why the film could not simply proceed in its existing form.

Why Ganguly And Luv Films Moved Court

Ganguly and Luv Films argued that Doosra drew heavily from moments inseparably associated with his public persona, especially the 2002 NatWest final and the unforgettable shirt-waving celebration at Lord’s. Their case was that these were not generic cricket references but distinctive markers of Ganguly’s identity and legacy, used without consent in a commercial film.

That challenge became sharper because Ganguly had already granted Luv Films exclusive rights in 2021 to develop audiovisual content based on his life and cricket journey. With an authorized biopic already in motion, the dispute around Doosra became a larger battle over who gets to dramatize one of Indian cricket’s most recognizable stories.

Dada Cast, Crew And Release Status

The authorized Ganguly biopic Dada is being directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, with Rajkummar Rao playing the former India captain. IMDb lists Saswata Chatterjee and Tanya Maniktala among the cast, and the film remains in production.

Its current listed release date is May 14, 2027, which makes it a future release. The film is positioned as a sports biographical drama tracing Ganguly’s life and cricketing rise, and it has already generated strong curiosity among fans eager to see one of Indian cricket’s most combative leaders recreated on screen.

What The Ruling Means For Dada

For Dada, the verdict lands at a crucial moment. Ganguly’s story is not just a sports chronicle but a part of modern Indian pop culture, and Friday’s order draws a sharper line around how closely identifiable real-life milestones can be used in fiction without consent.

That gives the authorized biopic added weight in the wider conversation around celebrity rights, screen adaptations, and ownership of personal legacy. More than a legal checkpoint, the order places Dada at the center of a bigger industry shift, one where star persona itself is increasingly being treated as protected ground.
