The IPL’s most electric rivalry has spilled out of the stadium and into a courtroom, with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) now facing a copyright infringement suit over the use of Superstar Rajinikanth’s film audio in franchise promotions.
Sun TV Network Limited has moved the Madras High Court against Chennai Super Kings Limited, alleging that CSK used songs and dialogues from Rajinikanth films for commercial promotions without obtaining permission. The company has sought damages of Rs 1 crore, along with a full account of revenues allegedly generated through the disputed promotional material.
The Latest Update: What Sun TV Network Has Alleged Against CSK
In its suit, Sun TV Network has claimed that CSK continued to use audio tracks and iconic dialogue clips from Rajinikanth titles including Jailer, Jailer 2 and Coolie across promotional content.
A key example flagged in court was CSK’s use of “Hukum” from Jailer in high-visibility franchise campaigns. The track featured prominently during moments such as the team’s jersey reveal and a trade-related announcement video, both positioned as brand-forward promotions.
Senior counsel J. Ravindran, appearing for Sun TV Network, submitted that the material was used for commercial gain, and therefore required prior authorisation. CSK, in its submission to the court, informed the Madras High Court that it had already stopped using the disputed audio. The matter remains under hearing as the court continues to consider arguments and whether any further restrictions or penalties are warranted.
Beyond the immediate case, the dispute has reignited conversation around how film music, dialogues and mass pop culture moments are increasingly folded into sports marketing, especially as franchises chase viral reach across social platforms.
About Jailer And Coolie
Jailer (2023) is a Tamil action film directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and headlined by Rajinikanth. The film’s soundtrack, composed by Anirudh Ravichander, became a pop culture staple, with “Hukum” emerging as one of the most-used celebration tracks both online and in stadium environments.
Coolie released in theatres on August 14, 2025. The film was directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and produced by Sun Pictures, with Rajinikanth in the lead and a star-studded cast that included Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir and Upendra.
