Aditya Sarpotdar, who previously directed Munjya, has clarified: Thama, starring Ayushmann Khurrana, a touch of Rashmika Mandanna, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and Paresh Rawal, is not a horror-comedy like the former titles in the Maddock Supernatural Universe (Stree, Bhediya, Munjya), but instead a romantic comedy with supernatural elements that will release Diwali 2025.
A Mythical Romantic-Comedy, Not Another Horror Spook
Sarpotdar revealed,
“It is a romantic film with certain supernatural elements backing it… mainly comedy and the theme being romantic.”
Unlike the prior stories rooted in folklore and horror, Thama is more comedic, lighter, and love-driven, designed to add a wider emotional range to the Maddock Universe.
Thama vs Munjya: Folklore vs Romance
- Munjya: Deeply rooted in Konkan folklore, local and mythic in its horror treatment.
- Thama: Leverages the Maddock Universe to introduce a vampire character into a rom-comedy world – a tonal pivot.

Sarpotdar explained that Maddock has already made,
“enough horror-comedies with Stree, Bhediya and Munjya.”
The creative team now wants to explore new terrain—a balance of romance, myth, and comedy that mixes supernatural elements with emotional storytelling.

Box Office Worldwide Verdict
Thama intentionally marks Maddock Films switching gears, entering a romantic stage while still staying supernatural. Ayushmann’s vampire elan plus Rashmika’s romantic energy could shift the entire tone of the Maddock Universe.
If this works, this Diwali release, it may break the mould of horror-comedy, attracting a wider, mainstream audience and proving that flipside storytelling can also become a Diwali sensation.
