Aditya Dhar made a splash in 2019 with the military action film Uri: The Surgical Strike. The film, starring Vicky Kaushal and Yami Gautam, was based on Indian Army’s retaliation after the 2016 Uri attack. Post its success, Aditya announced a mythological superhero film titled The Immortal Ashwatthama. The highly ambitious film, also starring Vicky, was supposed to star in 2021 but it kept getting delayed.
Now, the news is that the film has officially been shelved. To backtrack a little, the film was originally supposed to be produced by Ronnie Screwvala. The ambitious film had a budget of around 200 crores. But because of the pandemic and the industry’s economic conditions, Ronnie decided to cut the budget.
Aditya then approached Jio Studios to produce the film, which was the first in a planned trilogy. But reportedly, Jio Studios asked Aditya to replace Vicky with a much bigger star. This was something Aditya could not compromise. There were reports that he approached Ranveer Singh for the main role but things did not work out.
Allu Arjun Also Exited The Project
Earlier, we had reported that South superstar Allu Arjun was approached by Aditya for The Immortal Ashwatthama. However, looking at the fate of the recently released Prabhas starrer Adipurush, Allu has been wary of big-budget fantasy epics in India. So he decided to skip the film. So the once ambitious and heavily touted film has been put on the back burner for an indefinite amount of time. We can hope that Aditya finds a financer for this film and he can tell this story he has been wanting to tell for the longest time.
