A courtroom drama hitting cinemas in just 48 hours usually wants the conversation centred on its opening day prospects. The India Story has instead arrived at release week carrying a far more combustible headline: a last-minute CBFC clearance, more than 20 mandated changes, and 4 minutes 27 seconds of footage and dialogue removed before audiences can see it on July 24.
The Shreyas Talpade and Kajal Aggarwal-starrer was certified U/A 16+ on July 22, only two days before release. Public listings and promotional metadata identify Chettan DK as director, with Zee Studios and MIG Productions & Studios backing the film. The teaser has already pitched the film with the line, “Slow Poison in Progress,” framing it as a socially charged courtroom drama about pesticides, food systems and public health, which makes the scale of the censor intervention especially striking. What The Cbfc Changed In The India Story
Certification details available from the film’s censor-related report show that the Board ordered extensive dialogue-level changes across the film. A detailed disclaimer was inserted at the beginning and end, adding 50 seconds to the runtime, while multiple lines tied to farmers, Endosulfan, fake milk and the so-called cancer train were either modified or dropped altogether.
Among the changes, the dialogue “Munh mein dande daal” was modified. The line “Desh ke kisaan desh ke……. Khila ke maar rahe hain” was deleted. The dialogues “Kisaan aatankvadi” and “Sarkar deshdrohi” were also modified. A 15-second opening dialogue about farmers forming 25% of the population was deleted, while another 14-second stretch on mothers’ milk carrying a heavy chemical load leading to cancer in newborn babies was removed. The Board also cut an eight-second line beginning with “Aapko jab” and ending with “Naya Bharat hai,” a 20-second dialogue beginning with “Apni RDX waali” and ending with “jagah milti hai,” a 40-second second-half reference to Endosulfan, and a 20-second line beginning “Kisan doshi hai.”
One of the biggest deletions came after the interval, where a 1 minute 20 second dialogue beginning with “Kisaan annadata hai” was axed. The visual of disgust connected to the cancer train, along with the announcement dialogue about a train running from Bathinda to Bikaner, was also modified. After all the required changes, the film’s final certified runtime stands at 130.13 minutes, or 2 hours, 10 minutes and 13 seconds.
Why This Release Raises The Stakes For Shreyas Talpade
For Shreyas Talpade, this is not just another Friday release. The India Story is arriving with visible scrutiny already attached to it, and that puts sharper focus on his choice to front a film positioned around a contentious public-interest subject rather than a safer mainstream play. Over the past year, his screen appearances have largely come in familiar commercial spaces, so this release stands out as an attempt to lead a film that wants to provoke debate as much as it wants to entertain.
That also explains why the censor story matters beyond paperwork. When a film sold to audiences with a line like “Slow Poison in Progress” reaches theatres only after 20 cuts and modifications, the certification battle becomes part of its public identity.
