Mahesh Manjrekar’s Vedat Marathe Veer Daudle Saat Shelved Due To Financial Crisis, Akshay Kumar’s Shivaji Maharaj Role Left Incomplete

A historical epic that arrived with fanfare, controversy and star power has quietly collapsed before reaching the finish line. Vedat Marathe Veer Daudle Saat, Mahesh Manjrekar‘s much-discussed Marathi period film featuring Akshay Kumar as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, has been shelved after a financial crisis derailed production and left the film incomplete.

The project had attracted immediate attention when its first look dropped in 2022, not just because of its scale but because it promised to bring Akshay Kumar into Marathi cinema in a high-profile royal role. Mounted by Vaseem Qureshi under Qureshi Productions, the film was envisioned as an ambitious period spectacle and had already moved into production before the money troubles brought everything to a halt.

Financial Trouble Brought The Production To A Halt

The latest update is that the film stopped midway after running into funding issues, ending the journey of a project Mahesh Manjrekar had nurtured for years. The filmmaker had worked on the script for seven years before taking it on floors, and Akshay Kumar had already shot his portion before the production stalled.

According to NewsBytes, Mahesh Manjrekar’s Vedat Marathe Veer Daudale Saat was planned as a multi-starrer, featuring Pravin Tarde, Hardeek Joshi, Vishal Nikam, Jay Dudhane, Utkarsha Shinde, and Virat Madke in prominent roles. The project began filming in December 2022 and was initially lined up for a Diwali 2023 release. Manjrekar had reportedly worked on the script for more than seven years. Despite being mounted on a grand scale, the Marathi film faced setbacks and could not meet its intended 2023 release timeline.

That means the actor’s portrayal of Shivaji Maharaj, which had been one of the biggest talking points around the film, now remains unseen. For a project that was positioned as a major historical big-screen event, the shelving marks a sudden end to a film that seemed designed to travel far beyond a routine regional release.

Why The Film Had Drawn So Much Attention In Marathi Cinema

Beyond its headline casting, Vedat Marathe Veer Daudle Saat stood out because it aimed for a kind of scale rarely attempted in Marathi historical storytelling. The film’s ambition lay in presenting a warrior-driven period saga with mainstream reach, combining a deeply rooted regional subject with packaging meant to appeal to a much wider theatrical audience.

That made the project significant within Marathi cinema’s evolving landscape, where historical and cultural stories have often carried strong audience pull but not always this level of star-led visibility. With Mahesh Manjrekar behind the camera and a cast that included Pravin Tarde, Hardeek Joshi, Vishal Nikam, Jay Dudhane, Utkarsha Shinde and Virat Madke, the film had the ingredients of a prestige production before its momentum was cut short.

Akshay Kumar’s Unfinished Shivaji Maharaj Chapter

The shelving now leaves behind one of the more unusual footnotes in Akshay Kumar’s recent career. After appearing in Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Khel Khel Mein in 2024, the actor continued with a packed slate, but Vedat Marathe Veer Daudle Saat remains the project that will be remembered for a performance audiences were prepared to discuss long before they could actually watch it. As of April 2026, Hera Pheri 3 remains among his confirmed upcoming headline films, while this unfinished turn as Shivaji Maharaj stands as a rare role that generated buzz, completed a shoot phase, and still never made it to the screen.
