Anirudh’s Interview On Jawan

In a recent interview with Film Companion, Anirudh candidly spoke about the challenges he faced while making music for Jawan. He said that working on the movie was like doing multiple projects at once. The last two years have been a blur for him as he had back-to-back huge projects–Vikram, Jailer, and Jawan. The composer had a resolution that he would only do three films per year, but after the pandemic, things have changed.

Anirudh Ravichander doesn’t like to give interviews because of three reasons. He says the first reason is that he wants his music to speak. Secondly, he was once misquoted by a magazine. “I was taken aback by it. It was a big statement,” he says in his first interview in four years. The third reason is pretty much similar to the second. He likes to be a private person and doesn’t want to be misunderstood.

“The thing with Jawan was that there were a lot of emotions going on at the same time. For example, the train scene where Shah Rukh Sir is being a villain, and within a few seconds, there will be the story of a farmer. Then how are we going to musically connect it all was challenging. So, our task in Jawan is to bring all these emotions together and make it sound seamless to the audience. Working in Jawan was like working in two to three films at the same time because of the number of characters and emotions.”, he shared.

Explaining further how they approached each character in Jawan, Ravichander revealed, “The first character in the tribal area, we chose to go with tribal sounds which are also heroic. Our inspiration was Wakanda and stuff like that. When we shift to Azad, who is a more of a chill guy. So, we used cooler music. When we went to Vikram Rathore, when he was introduced, he wore earphones. We wanted him to be listening to old-school rock, which was in the mind of the director as well. But when he was introduced, we again went with the tribal chant, but with a modern twist because he is the same guy but we can’t use the tribal music which we used earlier here. But when he puts on the headphones, he will listen to rock music. Like what we were doing in our college days (laughs). So, everything fell in place organically for the film.”

Anirudh Ravichander has charged Rs 10 crore for Jawan and has now become the highest-paid music director in India, surpassing the fees of AR Rahman.
