After Delivering Gadar 2, 12th Fail & The Kashmir Files, Zee Studios Doubles Down on Content-Driven Cinema with Dhadak 2

Zee Studios has steadily built a reputation as one of India’s most consistent champions of rooted, emotionally charged, and socially relevant storytelling. In an era of spectacle-driven blockbusters, the studio has made bold choices, bringing stories to the screen that reflect the pulse of the nation. From The Kashmir Files and Gadar 2 to 12th Fail, and now Dhadak 2, Zee Studios continues to redefine what massy, meaningful cinema can look like.

The Kashmir Files: Starting the Disruption

Released in March 2022, The Kashmir Files emerged as a sleeper hit that surprised the entire industry. Directed by Vivek Agnihotri, the film told the story of the 1990 exodus of Kashmiri Pandits through a harrowing, fictionalized account. Despite its modest budget, the film became one of the biggest earners of the year, crossing ₹340 crore worldwide.

It sparked national debate, with audiences across demographics engaging with its subject. Love it or hate it, the film proved one thing, content rooted in Indian reality, no matter how polarizing, can shake the box office.

Gadar 2: Nostalgia Meets Nationalism

Zee Studios followed it up with another major event, Gadar 2. The sequel to the 2001 cult hit brought Sunny Deol back as Tara Singh and paired him once again with Ameesha Patel. Directed by Anil Sharma, the film blended over-the-top patriotism with high emotional stakes, and that formula clicked again.

Gadar 2 didn’t just ride on nostalgia but it re-energized the single-screen audience and drew families back to theatres. With global earnings of over ₹600 crore, it became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of all time.

12th Fail: Real Grit, Real India

In stark contrast to the scale of Gadar 2, 12th Fail delivered a quiet triumph rooted in simplicity. Based on the real-life story of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma, the film starred Vikrant Massey and was directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

What made 12th Fail stand out was its honesty – no gimmicks, no glamour. Just a powerful, inspirational story of a young man from Chambal who cracks the UPSC exams against all odds. Released in October 2023, it became a word-of-mouth success and swept the major awards, including Best Film and Best Director at the 69th Filmfare Awards.

Dhadak 2: Romance Rooted in Social Reality

Now, with Dhadak 2, Zee Studios in collaboration with Dharma Productions is taking a romantic narrative and giving it a socially urgent core. A spiritual successor to the 2018 film Dhadak, this new installment stars Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri and is based on the critically acclaimed Tamil film Pariyerum Perumal.

The trailer and songs have already sparked conversation online, with viewers praising its emotional intensity and social relevance. Unlike its predecessor, Dhadak 2 appears to lean into caste issues with more unflinching honesty. The film is set to release in theatres on August 1, 2025, and is being seen as Zee’s next major statement piece.

Dhadak 2 is directed by Shazia Iqbal and produced by Karan Johar, along with Umesh Kumar Bansal, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, Meenu Aroraa, Somen Mishra, and Pragati Deshmukh.

A Studio That’s Redefining the Mainstream

Zee Studios has quietly but confidently carved its place in the changing landscape of Indian cinema. It has backed films that break formula while still appealing to wide audiences. With each project, the studio has made it clear, it’s not afraid to take risks if the story matters.

From historical trauma and patriotic fervor to real-life resilience and caste commentary, Zee’s slate reflects a nation in flux and in conversation with itself. If Dhadak 2 delivers on its promise, it will be yet another reminder that storytelling, when rooted and fearless, still rules.
