Dukaan Movie Review: A Brave Concept And Impeccable Performances Make It A Worthy Watch

Dukaan is an intriguing Hindi film that delves into the world of surrogacy. Directed by Siddharth Singh and Garima Wahal, the movie presents an unconventional concept with a strong lead performance. However, does it reach its full potential? Let’s explore.

Dukaan: Plot

A 25-year-old carefree and border line crazy woman becomes a surrogate mother but runs away while she’s pregnant. Caught and imprisoned, she fights to have him back after completing her sentence. Does she have legal rights over the child, and will they reunite?

The story revolves around Jasmine Patel (played by Monika Panwar), a firebrand young woman toughened by her father’s abuse. When unexpected events lead her to commercial surrogacy, she forms a bond with the unborn child. But when hurt by the biological mother’s dismissal, Jasmine runs away. The film follows her fight to reunite with her son, even as the biological parents refuse to let her raise him as his “aaya” (governess).

Dukaan: Performances

Monika Panwar as Jasmine, she captivates in every scene, portraying an audacious character with emotional depth. Monali Thakur and Soham Majumdar deliver strong performances as the distraught biological parents, for whom surrogacy is their last hope. Sikandar Kher is average in brief role.

Dukaan: Analysis

Nuances of Surrogacy: Dukaan explores how surrogate mothers monetize their wombs and sheds light on the exploitation they often face from biological parents.

Emotional and Ethical Standpoint: The film looks beyond the commercial aspect, touching on themes of love, sacrifice, and intricate relationships.

Execution: While the concept is intriguing, the execution falters. The screenplay takes time to reach the crux, and the resolution feels lofty and rushed.

Dukaan: Verdict

Dukaan is a mixed bag. It offers thought-provoking moments but falls short in fully realizing its potential. Still, it’s worth watching for Monika Panwar’s compelling performance. First time producers Amar Jhunjhunwala and S K Ahluwalia deserve accolades for choosing novel concept and attempting a brave film.

Dukaan: Rating

Critics Rating: 4/5

Box Office Rating: 2/5
