The political biographical drama ‘Thalaivi‘ was released on September 10, 2021, the main hub of cinemagoers Maharashtra’s multiplexes and single screens were closed. Kangana Ranaut pleaded for the theatres to be reopened, but the government did not want to take a chance amid the pandemic as cases are rising again.
Although the film received positive reviews from critics upon its release, but this did not translated into box office numbers. The film had a poor opening weekend gross of Rs.1.25 crore. AL Vijay directed the film, which is based on the late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s life.
Thalaivii took a jump on Saturday, grossing 1.80 crore, and continued to do so on Sunday. As a result, the film’s total collection is 4.85 cr nett. Later, on its first Monday at the box office, the film saw a major drop by collecting only 65 lacs.

The state government has yet to reopen cinema halls since the second Covid-19 wave, hence Thalaivii, like the recently released Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings, Fast & Furious 9, Chehre, and BellBottom, was not released in Maharashtra.
