The iconic film Taal celebrated its 25th anniversary recently with a special screening at PVR Juhu in Mumbai. Directed by Subhash Ghai, the 1999 musical has remained a fan favourite over the years, especially with its unforgettable performances by Aishwarya Rai, Anil Kapoor, and Akshaye Khanna.
In honour of this milestone, Ghai and several key members of the cast and crew came together for a grand event. It was organised by Radio Nasha and led by RJ Rohini and RJ Divya Solgama.
In an interview before the screening, Subhash Ghai shared some interesting details with Bollywood Hungama.
Subhash Ghai On His Efforts To Improve Viewing Experience During Taal Release
In the 1990s, most Indian theatres didn’t have the best audio-visual quality, but Ghai wanted Taal to make a lasting impression. He personally asked theatre owners to improve their sound systems and even requested Metro Cinema in Mumbai to increase their screen size by 33% for the film’s release.
“We worked hard on the visuals and sound. It took 70 days to record the songs alone,” Ghai explained,
Another fascinating tidbit was the fact that Taal became the first Bollywood film to play at an IMAX theatre in the US, specifically at the White River State Park in Indianapolis.
Ghai proudly revealed that Taal was also the first Hindi film to be listed in Hollywood’s prestigious Variety magazine’s Top 10 chart, with sold-out shows in theatres across America.
Aishwarya Rai Didn’t Train For Her Difficult Yoga Poses, Govinda Was 1st Choice For Male Lead
Aishwarya Rai‘s role as Mansi, a village girl-turned-superstar, was one of her most iconic performances. Fans of the film will remember her intricate dance routines and the challenging yoga poses she performed.
When asked if Aishwarya trained for those scenes, Ghai revealed that the actress didn’t require much preparation. “She’s a great dancer, and when I asked if she could do the poses, she agreed instantly and showed me what she could do. Her flexibility and grace were a huge asset to the film.”
The conversation also turned to Anil Kapoor’s role as the eccentric music producer, Vikrant Kapoor. Surprisingly, Ghai shared that Govinda was initially the first choice for the part.
However, the popular actor turned it down because of how the storyline concluded, with Akshaye Khanna’s character winning the girl. “Govinda was concerned that his character might be seen as secondary,” Ghai explained, “So I told him not to do the film.” That’s when Ghai approached Anil Kapoor, and the rest is history.
Will We Ever Get A Taal Sequel?
As sequels to classic films are trending, especially after the success of Gadar 2 and the buzz around Border 2, there have been whispers of a potential Taal 2. When asked about the possibility of a sequel,
Ghai admitted that he has been approached by several people to create a follow-up to Taal, as well as to some of his other hits like Khalnayak and Karma. “Let’s see,” he teased, leaving fans hopeful.
As for his next project, Ghai shared that he’s been working on a new script for the past few years and hinted that an announcement might come by the end of the year.
