Before Laapataa Ladies created Oscar buzz for 2024, Aamir Khan Productions already had a rich history at the Academy Awards. Over the years, three other films from the production house made waves on the international stage.
Aamir Khan Starrer Lagaan Was Their 1st Film To Receive An Oscar Nomination
It all started with Lagaan in 2001. This epic sports drama set during British colonial rule tells the tale of Indian villagers who challenge their oppressors to a game of cricket, with freedom from taxes on the line.
The film didn’t just capture hearts across India—it earned a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, marking a significant moment for Indian cinema on a global level.
Taare Zameen Par & Peepli Live Followed
Next came Taare Zameen Par in 2007, which touched audiences with its sensitive portrayal of dyslexia. Directed by Aamir Khan and Amol Gupte, the film shines a light on the importance of understanding children’s unique talents and addressing the flaws in the education system.
This heartfelt story was India’s official entry for the Oscars and left a lasting impact on both parents and educators worldwide.
Peepli Live, released in 2010, took a sharp turn towards satire, offering a biting critique of rural poverty and media sensationalism. The plot revolves around two struggling farmers who consider suicide to gain media attention and government support.
Its clever storytelling and social commentary earned it critical praise and an official spot as India’s submission to the Academy Awards, further elevating Aamir Khan’s status as a producer of meaningful cinema.
Laapataa Ladies Is The Latest Aamir Khan Productions Film To Join The List
Now, Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao, has the potential to join these iconic films. The film has a whimsical yet powerful narrative which revolves around two women who get lost during a train journey and end up challenging societal expectations. As we know, it has been chosen as India’s official entry for the Oscars in 2024.
After RRR, whether this film brings the prestigious title to India or not, only time will tell, but Laapataa Ladies has already made us proud with its entry to the Oscars.
