The Wait Is Finally Over
After months of speculation, the makers of Sitaare Zameen Par have released the first look and the release date for Aamir Khan’s much-awaited drama. The film will release in theatres on June 20, 2025, and is already causing some buzz due to its similarities with the 2018 Spanish hit Campeones, suggesting that it is an official remake.
The announcement was made by Aamir Khan Productions on May 4 on social media, where the production house released the colourful poster of the film with the words, “A film that celebrates love, laughter and happiness.”
A Spiritual Sequel To Taare Zameen Par?
The film has been dubbed a spiritual sequel to Khan’s classic Taare Zameen Par (2007). Again, the new film deals with human beings with special needs while bringing a performance-orientated, socially reflective performance from Aamir Khan. However, while 2007 was deep and emotional, Sitaare Zameen Par is thought to be more inspiring and sports-based.
Directed by R.S. Prasanna, who is noted for Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, the film also stars Genelia D’Souza in an important role. We have not seen her in good Hindi cinema, which adds another layer of interest to the film’s casting.
Is It A Campeones Remake?
While the producers haven’t explicitly stated it, there has been a clear connection of Sitaare Zameen Par to the acclaimed Spanish film Campeones from industry insiders and media outlets. The 2018 film, about a basketball coach training a team of people with intellectual disabilities, was later adapted into English as Champions, starring Woody Harrelson.
If this is confirmed, this would be Aamir Khan’s second consecutive Hollywood remake; just last year he starred in Laal Singh Chaddha, an adaptation of Forrest Gump.
Delay Amid National Tragedy
The first look was due last week and was delayed because of the Pahalgam terror attack, with the team deciding it was better to be more sensitive to a release window. This was noted by fans and industry insiders with applause for Khan’s history of being mindful to the public.
