Metro In Dino, a highly anticipated romantic musical anthology from Anurag Basu, which will be a follow-up to his 2007 cult film Life… in a Metro, will be released on July 4, 2025. The film has a fresh cast that includes Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Ali Fazal. But if you think being a part of a Basu film means you will be given a script to prepare — think again.
Ali Fazal On Day One Panic: “What Do I Do? There Is No Scene!”
Ali Fazal, known for his versatility in Hindi and international films, recently spoke about his experience on set — and that it was not like what he had thought — in a recent interview.
“Basu sir has a very interesting way,” said Fazal. “The entire movie is in his head. So nobody knows what is happening. That’s another exciting thing about it, because you don’t know what is coming.”
Fazal revealed having had a panic attack on the first day of shooting.
“I remember Adi [Roy Kapur], Sara and all those guys were on set, and they could see me freaking out. Kya karein, scene nahi hai (What do I do, there is no scene paper!). But that’s how he works.”
A Movie with No Script? That’s Basu’s Rhythm
While Fazal affirmed that Metro In Dino has a complete script, he mentioned that he and the cast weren’t allowed to look at it.
“It’s quite a different structure to the first film. So Basu sir didn’t want us to see the whole script,” he said.
The process, while disconcerting, was creatively fruitful.
“He’ll give you a rhythm — literally a beat — and sometimes that’s all you need. It helped me think everything. For me, it’s nectar,” Fazal said, referring to his acting background from Adishakti Theatre Arts in Tamil Nadu.
“He Just Says ‘Next Shot’”: Fazal On The Lack Of Compliments
Fazal said that Basu, like Mani Ratnam, doesn’t give compliments either.
“Most of the time, when directors get a good shot, they say ‘good.’ Not Basu. He just says ‘next shot.’ That is how he works. You have to keep going,” he laughed.
Despite the unpredictability, Fazal appears to have embraced the chaos and originality.
“When the film releases, I would love to talk about it. Even in a light romantic film, he has his signature swing,” he said.

Metro In Dino, by celebrity producers Bhushan Kumar and Anurag Basu, is, like its forerunner Life… in a Metro, an anthology of witty cross-sectional stories through song and dance but with new players and a modern emotional terrain. The film is likely to touch upon love, heartbreak, and human connection in contemporary India while using musical language.
The ensemble cast is large, with appearances by some of Hindi film’s finest actors, including Fazal, Kapur, Khan, Pankaj Tripathi, Neena Gupta, and Konkona Sensharma.
