Punjabi actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh has been riding high with his recent hits Crew and Amar Singh Chamkila, and his Dil-Luminati tour has further solidified his star status. However, the tour has sparked controversy after allegations emerged regarding unpaid dancers.
Rajat Rocky Batta, a Los Angeles-based choreographer and owner of RRB Dance Company, has publicly criticised Diljit Dosanjh for reportedly not paying the Desi dancers who performed during the tour.
Choreographer Claims Desi Singers From Dil-Luminati Tour UNPAID
On July 19, Rocky took to Instagram to voice his disappointment. He praised Diljit for breaking barriers and selling out shows across North America but expressed frustration over the lack of payment for the dancers. Rocky’s post revealed that all Desi dancers involved in the Dil-Luminati tour were expected to perform without compensation.
The Instagram post read, “While we as a Desi Dance Community are really proud of a Desi artist breaking glass ceilings and doing sold-out tours across North America, I still feel deeply disappointed that Desi dancers are still undervalued as an industry. All of the Desi dancers in Diljit’s Dil-Luminati Tour were not paid and just expected to perform for free.”
Rocky continued, “Desi Dance as an industry has become a lifeblood for artists and does a significant part in the entire ecosystem of the industry, while its choreography, stage performances, music videos, reels, to even promoting songs… It’s an essential part of production and it’s really disappointing to see an artist of this calibre cut corners by stepping on the throats of the Desi dancer industry and continuing to attribute to that culture.”
He concluded, “Diljit, we are very happy for your success, but your dancers should have been paid and been a part of the production budget.”
Diljit Dosanjh’s Recent Achievements
Despite the backlash, Diljit Dosanjh remains a prominent figure in the entertainment industry. His recent films, Crew and Amar Singh Chamkila, have been well-received, showcasing his versatility as an actor.
Diljit also made headlines for being the first Punjabi singer to appear on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, where he performed his popular hits and shared a heartfelt moment with Fallon.
His Upcoming Projects
Looking ahead, Diljit is set to star in the highly anticipated sequel to No Entry. Produced by Boney Kapoor and directed by Anees Bazmee, No Entry 2 will see Diljit join Varun Dhawan and Arjun Kapoor.
The trio is enthusiastic about the project, which is expected to deliver more comedic elements than the 2005 original. Filming is slated to begin in December 2024, with the film targeting a major theatrical release in 2025, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the first movie.
