Ram Gopal Varma takes sides in Dhurandhar 2 vs Toxic clash, says Aditya Dhar’s sequel ‘respects audience intelligence’

When two tentpoles eye the same festive date, the industry usually debates screens, shows and star power. This time, the loudest pre clash commentary has come from filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, who has framed the March 19, 2026 face off between Dhurandhar: The Revenge and Yash’s Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups as something far more loaded than a routine box office collision.

Varma has publicly leaned toward Aditya Dhar’s sequel, arguing that the difference between the films is not “Hindi vs South” or actor fandom, but what each project believes about its viewers.

The Latest Update: Rgv’s Tweet Picks Dhurandhar 2 Over Toxic

In a tweet reacting to the head to head, Ram Gopal Varma wrote, “The key distinction between the two is that #Dhurandhar values the audience’s intelligence, whereas #Toxic assumes their ignorance.” In the same thread, he also contrasted the sensibilities he associates with each kind of cinema, taking a swipe at “mindless idolisation,” exaggerated stunts, loud soundtracks and flashy visuals, while praising realistic action, subtle performances and narratives that treat the viewer as “intelligent and emotionally perceptive.”

He summed up his stance by adding, “It is not my admiration for @AdityaDharFilms that prompted this, but my aspiration for Indian Cinema. I am eagerly awaiting March 19th to see if India is Dhurandhar or Toxic.”

The tweet has added fresh fuel to a clash that was already being positioned as one of 2026’s first mega theatrical battles, especially since both films are currently slated to arrive on the same day, coinciding with Eid.

What We Know About Dhurandhar 2 And Toxic So Far

Dhurandhar: The Revenge is the follow up to Dhurandhar, the Ranveer Singh led espionage action thriller directed by Aditya Dhar. The first film released on December 5, 2025 and went on to become a major theatrical blockbuster, with reports pegging its worldwide gross at Rs 1,354.84 crore. The sequel is locked for a March 19, 2026 theatrical release.

Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups is a period gangster action thriller directed by Geetu Mohandas, led by Yash. The film is also scheduled for March 19, 2026, setting up the direct clash.

Ranveer Singh’s Recent And Upcoming Work

Ranveer Singh’s last theatrical release was Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar (2025), which emerged as a blockbuster and is among the biggest Hindi hits in recent years. Up next, he returns as Hamza Ali Mazari in Dhurandhar: The Revenge (2026), positioned as a multi language theatrical release and one of the year’s most high profile sequels.

Beyond the spy franchise, Ranveer also has Farhan Akhtar’s Don 3 officially announced, where he steps into the iconic role previously played by Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. With a blockbuster behind him and two major franchise sized films ahead, Ranveer’s current phase is clearly tilted toward large scale, star driven theatrical events.
