Before the pandemic, Superstar Shah Rukh Khan took some creative risks with his films. He played a psychologist, a fan with a grudge, a man of short stature, and even a moonshiner.
Despite his efforts, these roles didn’t fare well at the box office. His rough patch reached a low point with the 2018 film Zero, directed by Aanand L Rai. Yet, Rai reveals that Khan was already planning his return during this challenging time.
After the failure of Zero, Khan took a five-year break from the limelight. But when he made his comeback in 2023, it was with a bang. His films Pathaan and Jawan were major hits. In a recent interview with Connect Cine, Rai discussed Khan’s confidence and vision during his downtime.
Shah Rukh Khan Remained CONFIDENT Despite Zero’s Debacle
Rai shared, “The best part is, he knew.” He explained that even though Khan’s career seemed uncertain after Zero, the actor had a clear plan for his return.
Rai recalled, “He was very clear. Nobody knew but he knew that he is coming back. In fact, in that moment I was sitting in front of him, jab unhe pata tha woh kya karne waale hai aur kaise (when he knew what he was going to do next and how). He was never lost. He knew that he isn’t going anywhere, that, ‘I am there.’ It is not even about survival, you don’t call him Baadshah for no reason, but he knew and did exactly that.”
SRK’s Powerful Return With Pathaan, Jawan & Dunki
Rumours had suggested Khan would star in a biopic about Indian astronaut Rakesh Sharma, titled Saare Jahan Se Achha. However, he chose a different path, focusing instead on a remarkable comeback. In 2023, Khan not only starred in Pathaan and Jawan but also Dunki, with all three films achieving commercial success.
Now, Khan is gearing up for his next project, King. It was revealed that the film will be directed by Sujoy Ghosh and feature Khan alongside his daughter Suhana Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, and Munjya star Abhay Verma. Production is expected to start in November this year.
Meanwhile, Aanand L Rai recently saw his film Phir Aayi Hasseen Dilruba released on Netflix. The film stars Taapsee Pannu and Vikrant Massey, showcasing Rai’s continued contribution to Indian cinema.
