Independence Day Releases Double iSmart & Mr Bachchan Badly Flop At The Box Office; Nithiin’s Aay Holds Its Ground

The Independence Day weekend saw Telugu films Double iSmart and Mr Bachchan flop while Aay managed to achieve some success.

The Independence Day weekend brought three new Telugu films to the box office, but the results were a mixed bag. While Double iSmart and Mr Bachchan flopped dramatically, Aay managed to achieve some success.

Double iSmart Falls Short With Just Rs 25 Crore, Lags Behind Rs 60 Crore Of iSmart Shankar

Double iSmart opened with a disappointing Rs. 10.50 crore on Independence Day. This was a letdown for a commercial Telugu film expected to perform well during a major holiday. The film’s negative reviews led to a sharp decline in its box office numbers, and it only scraped together around Rs. 23 crore in its extended first week, including Rs. 2 crore from the Hindi version.

After a poor showing on its second Friday, bringing in just Rs. 20 lakhs, the film is expected to end up with a total gross of around Rs. 25 crore. This is significantly less than the Rs. 60 crore earned by the original iSmart Shankar in 2019.

Ravi Tejas’s Mr Bachchan Also Stumbles With Rs 15 Cr

Mr Bachchan starring Ravi Teja also had a rough ride. The film earned Rs. 7 crore on its opening day but only managed to double that amount over the extended week, accumulating Rs. 15 crore.

Like Double iSmart, it has been pulled from most theatres and earned less than Rs. 20 lakhs on its second Friday. The total earnings in the Telugu states are expected to be around half of what the theatrical rights were sold for.

Nithiin’s Aay Holds Strong With Rs 7 Crore, To Outperform Mr Bachchan

On a brighter note, Aay ended up being the best performer among the three releases. Despite starting with a modest Rs. 80 lakhs on its first day, the film gathered approximately Rs. 7 crore in eight days. It maintained a steady pace, earning Rs. 60 lakhs on its second Friday.

This performance suggests it might surpass Mr Bachchan by the end of its run. Nithin, the lead actor’s previous film, MAD, was a sleeper hit last year, grossing over Rs. 20 crore. However, it’s unlikely that Aay will reach those heights.

Film Opening Day Gross Extended Week Gross Current Earnings Second Friday Earnings Expected Total Gross
Double iSmart Rs. 10.50 crore Rs. 23 crore Rs. 25 crore (approx.) Rs. 20 lakhs Rs. 25 crore (approx.)
Mr Bachchan Rs. 7 crore Rs. 15 crore Rs. 15 crore < Rs. 20 lakhs ~ Rs. 15 crore
Aay Rs. 80 lakhs Rs. 7 crore Rs. 7 crore Rs. 60 lakhs Potentially surpassing Mr Bachchan

The Telugu film industry is having a tough year, with only two major hits in the first eight months. While the second half of the year promises a few big releases, it’s uncertain if they will be enough to turn things around, especially with potential delays affecting some films.
