The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has put its stamp on S Shankar’s upcoming film Indian 2, prescribing significant alterations before granting it a ‘U/A’ certificate.
Among the directives was removing a shot featuring a woman’s bust, deemed necessary by the board. The particular scene is said to appear around the 34th minute of the vigilante-themed drama.
The decision has sparked debate within the film industry about balancing artistic expression and traditional values.

A source from the film’s crew expressed frustration to Mid-day, stating, “It is a small change, but why are movies at the receiving end of such needless changes? To snip a shot or beep out abuses is just an attempt to sanitise cinema. This shows the ongoing debate between preserving traditional values and allowing artistic expression.”
In addition to the bust shot, the CBFC ordered the removal of the label ‘Bribe market’ from a scene and the substitution of seven expletives. These changes reflect ongoing discussions about censorship versus creative freedom in Indian cinema.
Indian 2 continues the saga of Kamal Haasan’s iconic character Senapathy from the 1996 film Indian, now a vigilante fighting corruption and social injustice. The film, set to release in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi, also stars Siddharth, Rakul Preet Singh, and Kajal Aggarwal in pivotal roles.

The CBFC’s certificate, now available online, indicates that Indian 2 will run for three hours and four seconds, underscoring its epic scale and narrative depth.
Apart from these alterations, the board mandated enlarging static smoking disclaimers and providing necessary copyright clearances, which the filmmakers have reportedly fulfilled.
Directed by Shankar and featuring music by Anirudh Ravichander, Indian 2 is slated to hit theatres on July 12th. The film also utilizes CGI and body doubles to bring late actors Vivek and Nedumudi Venu to life, promising a spectacle of action and social commentary.
