Nayanthara has strongly fired back at actor Dhanush after he issued a legal notice demanding Rs 10 crore for the use of clips from their 2015 film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in her upcoming Netflix documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale.
In a heartfelt open letter, the actor accused Dhanush of harbouring a long-standing grudge and of using legal action to settle personal scores.
Nayanthara Claims Dhanush Denied Repeated Requests To Use Visuals From Their Film
The letter criticises Dhanush for denying permission to use songs and visuals from the film despite multiple requests. Nayanthara also described how the refusal, especially after years of waiting for approval, hurt her and the entire team behind the documentary. She made it clear that her intention was never to cause harm but to celebrate her career and life.
“I wish you were half the person you portray to be on stage in audio launches in front of your innocent fans, but clearly, you do not practice what you preach,” Nayanthara wrote.
She expressed disappointment at Dhanush’s actions after the trailer for the documentary was released. She took particular issue with the fact that Dhanush questioned the use of just three seconds of behind-the-scenes footage, which she claimed had already been widely shared on social media.
Actress Calls Herself A ‘Self-Made’ Woman With No Industry Connections
In her open letter, Nayanthara reflected on her journey in the film industry. She emphasised that unlike many of her peers, she had no industry connections and had to work hard to earn her place.
“Cinema as we all know is a fight for survival for people like me: a self-made woman with no links in the industry,” she wrote.
Nayanthara further highlighted that the documentary was the result of the hard work and dedication of many people, including the film’s collaborators and well-wishers. However, despite this, Dhanush’s refusal to allow the use of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan material left her heartbroken.
The letter also questioned Dhanush’s motives. She suggested that his refusal to grant permission wasn’t driven by business reasons but by personal animosity.
“Your refusal to give NOC for use of elements of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan might be justified by you to the Courts from the copyright angle, but I wish to remind you that there is a moral side to it, which has to be defended in the court of God,” Nayanthara added.
Nayanthara also talked about Dhanush’s alleged dissatisfaction with the success of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. She recalled how his public comments prior to the film’s release hinted at his displeasure over its success. She expressed that the animosity seemed to have lingered for years, despite the film being a massive hit and beloved by audiences.
Nayanthara Suggests Dhanush To Find Peace With Others’ Successes
The letter concluded with Nayanthara urging Dhanush to find peace with others’ successes, particularly those from outside the traditional film industry. She shared a thought-provoking message, hoping Dhanush would come to terms with his past and start celebrating the achievements of others. “The world is a big place. It’s meant for everyone,” she wrote.

Vignesh Shivan Also REACTED On The Matter
Nayanthara’s husband, filmmaker Vignesh Shivan, also addressed the issue on social media. Sharing a video of Dhanush from a previous audio launch, Vignesh quoted Dhanush’s words, which urged people to embrace positivity and stop harbouring hate.
“Live and let live. Nobody has to hate another person. If you like somebody, celebrate them,” Dhanush had said in the video. Vignesh added a note expressing hope that people would learn to find joy in others’ happiness.

Nayanthara’s upcoming documentary will highlight her journey from humble beginnings to becoming a superstar. It will include stories from her friends and colleagues in the industry, such as Rana Daggubati, Taapsee Pannu, and Nagarjuna Akkineni, along with insights from her family and husband, filmmaker Vignesh Shivan.
The documentary will showcase her hard work as an artist and how she has evolved as a daughter, sister, wife, and mother.
