Filmmaker Rohit Shetty has stirred up a debate with his recent comments about new-age actors and their reliance on social media.
Speaking in an interview with casting director Mukesh Chhabra for Mashable India, Shetty expressed his concerns about the growing trend of insecurity among fresh actors in the industry.
He claimed that most of the new stars’ social media followers and online articles are “paid,” a practice he believes won’t have long-term benefits.

Shetty pointed out that social media fame is fleeting. “90% of followers and articles are ‘paid,’ and it won’t help them after two years,” he said.
Instead of focusing on online popularity, he believes new actors need to concentrate on their performances and prove themselves on the big screen. He added that actors should not get trapped in the virtual world and should instead face the reality of the industry.

To drive his point home, Shetty recalled how Salman Khan, at the peak of his career, took on a smaller role in the 1996 film Jeet. At a time when his movies weren’t performing well, Salman chose to act in Jeet with Sunny Deol, even though his screen time was limited.
Shetty admired Salman’s decision to take on the role as a stepping stone to further his career. “When Salman Khan’s movies were not working, he did Jeet with Sunny Deol. He just did it as an anchor and saw it as an opportunity to move forward,” Shetty shared.
Jeet went on to become a box-office hit, marking a turning point in Salman’s career. After that, he went on to deliver multiple successful films like Judwaa, Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya, and Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai. Shetty pointed out that the willingness to take on roles, regardless of their size, is something missing in today’s stars.
The director’s upcoming project, Mission Chulbul Singham, will feature Salman Khan & marking their collaboration once again. Shetty also praised the actor’s ability to reinvent himself despite challenges in his career.
Salman’s Work Front
On Salman’s work front, the actor is gearing up for Sikandar, a collaboration with director AR Murugadoss. The action-packed film will also star Rashmika Mandanna, Sharman Joshi, Kajal Aggarwal, and Prateik Babbar. It is set to release in cinemas during Eid 2025.
