Abhishek Chaubey’s Ishqiya (2010) might have been a very different film had its original cast stayed on board. The director recently shed light on the behind-the-scenes changes that led to Pankaj Tripathi, Irrfan Khan, and Preity Zinta stepping away from the project. Their exits ultimately paved the way for some unforgettable performances by Naseeruddin Shah, Arshad Warsi, and Vidya Balan.
Pankaj Tripathi, Irrfan Khan & Preity Zinta Were Originally Cast For Ishqiya
When Ishqiya was in its early stages, the film was expected to feature some of Bollywood’s brightest stars. According to Chaubey, Pankaj Tripathi was initially cast as Khalujan, a role that was later played by Naseeruddin Shah.
Meanwhile, the late Irrfan Khan was set to play Babban, a character that eventually went to Arshad Warsi. Preity Zinta had also been finalised for a role after reading an early draft of the script, expressing her excitement to be part of the project.
Why The Casting Changed To Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah & Arshad Warsi?
The first major change came when Preity Zinta dropped out of the film. Chaubey recalled being in New York at that time when he received the news.
“I received the news that Preity had left the project,” he shared in an interview with Mashable India.
The real twist came shortly when Chaubey ran into Irrfan Khan at a luxury hotel in New York. As the director pitched the story to Khan, the actor found that the changes made to the script no longer suited his character, which led to him walking away as well.
“The script changes weren’t in favour of his character. That’s when I realised he probably wouldn’t do it,” he said.
With both Zinta and Khan no longer attached to the film, Chaubey had to rethink the project’s direction. The director’s next move was to approach Vidya Balan for the role of Krishna Verma as a turning point for the film. “Vidya immediately came on board,” Chaubey said.
As for the other roles, Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi stepped in to fill the shoes of Khalujan and Babban, respectively. While Shah was initially hesitant about playing a romantic role, Chaubey personally sent him the script. “He called me asking, ‘Are you sure you want me for this?’” Chaubey recalled.
Despite his initial reservations, Shah’s portrayal of Khalujan became a highlight of the film & earned him widespread acclaim for his performance.
Ultimately, Ishqiya became a huge success, but it’s interesting to think about how different the film might have been had its original cast stayed on.
