Sanam Teri Kasam is back in the spotlight with Its re-release and has surprised everyone with its box office response. Directors Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru are ecstatic about the film’s growing success.
During a recent interview, they shared how Harshvardhan Rane landed the lead role instead of Vicky Kaushal and spoke about Bollywood’s changing trends.
Why Harshvardhan Rane Was Chosen For Sanam Teri Kasam?
Harshvardhan Rane was not the original choice for the film. Ehan Bhat was initially selected and had trained for three months. However, two final auditions were pending – one for Vicky Kaushal and one for Harshvardhan.
Just a day before the photoshoot, Harshvardhan auditioned and changed everything. He performed a key elevator scene, where the character removes his shirt, and impressed the directors. “He did very well,” Vinay Sapru told Bollywood Hungama. He confirmed that this audition secured Harshvardhan’s role.
Eros Marketers Called The Film ‘Old Fashioned’
Vinay Sapru also spoke about why Bollywood hasn’t made similar films in recent years. He shared that during its original release, marketing teams at Eros called the film “old-fashioned” and doubted the title’s appeal. But Sapru always believed in its emotional connection.
He also felt that many new-age filmmakers are disconnected from real audiences. “Most filmmakers today who come from film schools, don’t understand what the audience wants,” he said.
According to him, the true pulse of India is found beyond elite urban areas, in places like Chandigarh, Meerut, and Raipur.
Sapru didn’t hold back when discussing Bollywood’s storytelling today. He questioned the rise of films focusing on topics like erectile dysfunction and said that they are “better suited for documentaries” than mainstream cinema.
“We tell stories that touch hearts and reflect Indian culture,” he said. He also pointed out that young people dominate even at events like the Kumbh Mela, proving that India’s youth still values tradition.
Coming back to the film, Sanam Teri Kasam revolves around Inder Lal Parihaar, a troubled ex-convict and Saraswati “Saru” Parthasaarthy (a reserved librarian). Their love is intense, defying societal norms, but is ultimately marked by heartbreak. The film has a runtime of 156 minutes and not too long.
