The Marvels, the upcoming superhero film starring Brie Larson, is set to release worldwide on November 10, 2023. The film is the 33rd installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and a sequel to Captain Marvel (2019). The film will feature Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, along with Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. The film will also introduce the villainous Skrulls, an alien race that can shapeshift into any form.
However, The Marvels may face a tough competition in India, as it is likely to clash with the much-awaited Salman Khan-led action-thriller Tiger 3. The film is the third installment of the Tiger franchise, which began with Ek Tha Tiger (2012) and continued with Tiger Zinda Hai (2017). The film will feature Khan as Avinash Singh Rathore/Tiger, a former RAW agent, along with Katrina Kaif as Zoya Humaini, a former ISI agent. The film will also star Emraan Hashmi as the main antagonist.
Both films are expected to release in theatres in the IMAX format as well as the standard formats. However, according to a report by Bollywood Hungama, The Marvels might get limited or zero shows on IMAX screens in India due to Tiger 3.
Tiger 3 and The Marvels to compete for IMAX screens
In the past, whenever a Hindi biggie was released alongside an IMAX-friendly Hollywood flick, the latter got a preference in IMAX screens across the world. In the past, ’83 (2021) and Adipurush’s (2023) IMAX plans got dashed, thanks to Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Flash respectively. But Khan has a huge fan following in India and his films usually perform well at the box office, especially during festive seasons like Diwali. The new Tiger 3 posters mentioned that the film will also be released in IMAX. Many felt that it would not be possible as Tiger 3 clashes with The Marvels, the Hollywood superhero film.

The report quotes a trade source as saying, “Tiger 3 will get a release in IMAX screens in India. Most probably, it’ll get almost all shows in the giant screen auditorium. As for The Marvels, it’ll have to share shows with the Salman Khan-starrer. There’s a small possibility that it might not get a release in IMAX at all, though the possibility seems remote. A clearer picture will emerge in the next two weeks.”
The source also adds, “Usually, IMAX Corporation doesn’t encourage the release of two IMAX films on the same day or week. And if it happens, the Hollywood film gets the upper hand. Hence, this is a significant development. This probably has been possible due to the supremacy of YRF and of course the insane stardom of Salman Khan.”
Meanwhile, sources also state that Tiger 3 will also get a release in several IMAX properties overseas.
It remains to be seen how both films will perform at the box office and how they will affect each other’s business. Both films are expected to be high-octane action-packed entertainers that will appeal to different segments of the audience.
YRF’s Spy Universe Becomes Biggest Brand In Indian Cinema
Tiger 3 is also the fifth film in the YRF Spy Universe, which includes Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai, War and Pathaan. The spy universe is a unique concept that brings together some of the biggest stars of Bollywood as secret agents who work for different agencies but sometimes cross paths or team up for a common goal. Salman Khan had a cameo appearance as Tiger in Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan earlier this year, which hinted at a crossover between the two films. It is also reported that Shah Rukh Khan will have a special extended cameo as Pathaan in Tiger 3.
