Vicky Kaushal starrer Chhaava is making headlines for all the wrong reasons. The historical drama, which showcases the bravery of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, is being linked to the violent protests in Nagpur. While many have remained silent, filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri has stepped in to defend the movie and call out those blaming it.
Vivek Agnihotri Slams ‘Cultural Jihad’ Claims
Agnihotri took to social media to express his frustration. He wrote, “The #UrbanNaxal ecosystem is waging a cultural jihad against our films—#TheKashmirFiles and #Chhaava are under attack because they dare to awaken the nation. Defeat them in this battle.”
His comments came in response to a social media user who accused films like The Kashmir Files, The Sabarmati Report, and Chhaava of dividing society.
Agnihotri hit back and wrote, “Before #TheKashmirFiles the society wasn’t polarised at all. Muslim terrorists in Kashmir were helping Hindus find their houses and the corpses of their loved ones. JKLF never existed. See, how in Bengal, Islamists help in bringing down hanging bodies of Hindu women from trees.”

Nagpur Violence And Alleged Role Of Chhaava
The controversy began after protests in Nagpur on Monday over the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar. Reports claim that protestors burned an effigy of Aurangzeb along with a green cloth. Rumours then spread that a religious book had been burned, leading to riots in the city. Authorities imposed a curfew to control the situation.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis spoke on the issue. He said, “This violent incident and riots seem to be pre-planned. Chhaava movie has ignited people’s anger against Aurangzeb still, everyone must keep Maharashtra peaceful.”
Despite the growing controversy, Vicky Kaushal and the makers of Chhaava have not addressed the allegations. The film is based on a book of the same name and highlights Sambhaji Maharaj’s fight against the Mughal empire.
While it has been praised for its historical narrative, the ongoing debate over its impact on current events continues to intensify. The film’s historical accuracy has also been questioned by many.
