Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn, two of Bollywood’s biggest stars, opened up about how actors are paid in the industry. During a candid conversation at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2024, they shared how they negotiate their salaries and how the earnings from films work.
Ajay Devgn On How Actors Charge In The Industry
When asked about rising film costs, especially actors’ salaries, Ajay explained that an actor’s fee depends on the project. “The actors charge according to scripts, films, and projects. And most of us are charging according to recoveries,” Ajay said. This means their pay is often based on how much a film is expected to earn.
Akshay, who is known for his straightforward approach, also agreed with Ajay’s point. He stated, “I agree with most of what he said. If we sign a film today, we don’t charge anything; we just take a stake.”
Instead of getting a fixed salary, Akshay and other actors now take a share of the film’s profits. If the film does well, they get a portion of the earnings. “If it works, we get a share in the profit, but if it doesn’t, we don’t get any money,” Akshay explained. This makes the deal fairer for both actors and producers.
Ajay added that sometimes actors don’t even get a share of the profits. “Sometimes, there is no share, either. Then you have to let go of the price. That’s also passion,” he said.
He pointed out that actors sometimes take lower fees when they are passionate about the script or the project.
The Duo Recently Shared Screen In Singham Again
The two stars also discussed their recent success with Singham Again, directed by Rohit Shetty. Ajay played the main character, DCP Bajirao Singham, while Akshay made a cameo. The film has been a huge success, earning over Rs 300 crore worldwide, which shows the strong box-office appeal of the duo.
Now, both of them have their individual film projects. Ajay has sequels like Raid 2, Son Of Sardaar 2, De De Pyaar De 2 and more. Additionally, the sequel of Shaitaan and Drishyam 3 was also confirmed recently.
Talking about Akshay, he has projects like Welcome 3, Housefull 5, C Sankaran Biopic with Karan Johar, Bhooth Baangla with Priyadarshan and more.
