Anurag Kashyap Reveals 5 Other Films Including Kennedy Are Stuck In Limbo With No Clarity About Release: ‘Nobody Is Interested In…’

Anurag Kashyap reveals that five of his films including Kennedy are stuck in limbo due to profit-driven industry issues.

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently opened up about the struggles he’s facing with his unreleased films. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, he shared that five of his films (including the much-anticipated Kennedy) are stuck in limbo.

Despite Kennedy getting positive feedback at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, it has still not been released in India, keeping both Kashyap and his audience waiting.

Anurag Kashyap ‘Frustrated’ Over 5 Unreleased Films

Kashyap expressed his frustration over the situation and said, “I have made five films that are lying unreleased. Where is Kennedy? And whose hands is Kennedy in? It’s in the hands of some people who’ve never made films before.”

He pointed out the strange irony that a film receiving international recognition is still unable to get a release due to internal complications.

The filmmaker also shared his concerns about the current state of the Indian film industry, which he believes prioritises profit over creativity.

“People who made Kennedy in the studio are all gone. And now, the people who are there, the directive given to them is to up the share prices, generate profits, cost recovery… That’s all there is. Nobody is interested in films,” he explained. Kashyap feels this profit-driven mindset is preventing unique and creative projects like Kennedy from being seen by audiences.

Kashyap admitted to detaching himself from Kennedy, acknowledging that the delays had affected his mental well-being. “I’ve detached myself from Kennedy, because I don’t want it to become like Black Friday. I will not let anything pull me down again in life…” he said.

He also reflected on his exhaustion with the constant struggle and said, “I’ve had my fights, but you can’t fight a wall. I don’t have the energy…”

Filmmaker Praises South & Criticises Hindi Film Industry

Kashyap also compared the Indian industry with the South Indian film industry, where filmmakers like Sukumar, director of Pushpa, are given the freedom to create without heavy corporate pressure.

“In the South, they invest in filmmakers and empower them to make films. Here, everyone is trying to create a universe. Do they understand their own universe, and how minuscule they are in it?” he questioned.

Despite his disillusionment with the industry, Kashyap remains passionate about filmmaking. However, he’s considering a move out of Mumbai to regain his peace of mind. “I’m very disgusted by some people, but let them be,” he remarked. He suggests that he may leave the toxic aspects of the industry behind to focus on personal growth.
