Ananth Mahadevan, a National Award-winning filmmaker, has levelled allegations of plagiarism against Aamir Khan–Kiran Rao’s critically acclaimed film Laapataa Ladies, claiming it to be a copy of his 1999 production Ghunghat Ke Pat Khol.
While Mahadevan garners support from some quarters, the original writer of Laapataa Ladies, Biplab Goswami, asserts that the film’s story, script, dialogues, characterisation, and scenes are all 100% original.

Mahadevan’s Claims Of Similarities Between Laapataa Ladies & His 1999 film
In an interview with Mid Day, Mahadevan emphasised similarities in plot points between the two films, revolving around a mix-up at a wedding.
He detailed how both narratives follow the journey of two brides navigating the aftermath of the confusion. However, he acknowledges differences beyond this point, clarifying that the essence of his film was replicated in Laapataa Ladies.
Responding to Mahadevan’s allegations, Goswami defended the originality of his work, citing accolades received for his script and denying any influence from external sources. He affirmed his commitment to ethical storytelling, emphasising his academic background and personal experiences as foundational to his narrative creation process.
Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies features Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Ravi Kishan in pivotal roles.
