Veteran screenwriter Javed Akhtar recently opened up about his views on Ranbir Kapoor’s film Animal and the evolution of the ‘angry young man’ archetype in Indian cinema.
Despite the massive success of Animal in 2023, the film faced criticism for its controversial scenes. Akhtar, known for his candid opinions, has previously voiced his critique of the film.
Javed Akhtar TALKS About ‘Angry Young Man’ Amitabh Bachchan
In an interview with The Indian Express, Akhtar discussed the shift from the ‘angry young man’ roles popularised by Amitabh Bachchan. He reflected on how these characters once carried deep emotional pain, which was evident behind their anger.
“There was a deep hurt behind the anger,” Akhtar explained. However, he noted that over time, the portrayal became more about raw anger without emotional depth, leading to the decline of this character type.
Javed On Whether Ranbir Kapoor Can Be A Star Like Amitabh Bachchan
When asked if Ranbir Kapoor’s involvement in Animal would prevent him from reaching the iconic status of Amitabh Bachchan, Akhtar responded with a mix of honesty and optimism. “No, no. I may write a film for him,” Akhtar said with a smile, suggesting that he still sees potential in Kapoor despite the criticism surrounding Animal.
Animal, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, features a strong ensemble cast including Rashmika Mandanna, Triptii Dimri, Bobby Deol, and Anil Kapoor. Ranbir Kapoor plays Ranvijay Singh, a character who chooses a path of violence, showcasing a different facet of his acting prowess.
For the unversed, Javed Akhtar has also been making headlines for his recent appearance in the docu-series Angry Young Men: The Salim-Javed Story.
