Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has finally addressed the public regarding the explosive findings of the Hema Committee Report. With a career spanning 47 years, Mohanlal has become a symbol of influence in the industry.
However, his role as the former president of AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists) has now placed him in the centre of a storm following the report’s revelations.
The Hema Committee Report, submitted to the Kerala Government in 2019, was kept under wraps until a redacted version was released just a week ago.
The report has since sent shockwaves through the industry, with several female talents coming forward to name their abusers, some of whom were AMMA members. As the pressure mounted, Mohanlal and other AMMA members stepped down from their positions, leading to speculation about their silence on the matter.
Mohanlal Reveals Why He Was Silent About Hema Committee Report
In a recent press conference, Mohanlal, dressed in a sharp blue suit, addressed these speculations head-on. He began by clarifying the reasons for his delayed response.
“I read reports that claimed I ran away from the situation and refused to speak about it,” Mohanlal said.
He explained that his absence was due to a combination of professional and personal commitments, including his ongoing film project, Barroz, and his wife’s recent surgery. He also announced that the release of Barroz, initially scheduled for October, has been postponed in light of the current situation.
Actor Says He Isn’t A Part Of Any Power Group
One of the most shocking revelations in the Hema Committee Report was the existence of a power lobby group within the industry, allegedly dominated by men who control key decisions. Mohanlal, however, denied any knowledge of such a group. “I am not part of any power group in Malayalam cinema and not aware of the existence of any such group,” he stated firmly.
When asked about the allegations of sexual misconduct and assault against some AMMA members, Mohanlal emphasised the need for accountability. “Wrongdoers should be punished if there is evidence against them,” he said, underscoring his support for justice in these cases.
Mohanlal also defended AMMA, stating that while the industry as a whole must answer the issues raised in the report, AMMA should not bear the burden alone. “Cinema is only a slice of society, but I am not justifying what happened. AMMA members are sentimental and are vulnerable to being shattered,” he said. He stressed that other organisations are also involved in the industry’s challenges, and it is unfair for AMMA to face the brunt of the criticism.
As the industry grapples with the fallout from the report, Mohanlal urged for a balanced approach. “This is a matter destroying the industry. We had toiled a lot to take the industry to its present stature. Please, do not destroy the industry by just focusing on this issue,” he pleaded.
Addressing the criminal cases faced by some film professionals, Mohanlal pointed out that the legal system is in place to deal with those who have committed wrongdoing. He expressed his hope that the industry can move forward, learning from its mistakes and ensuring a better future for all involved.
