Has Shah Rukh Khan applied for the position of coach for the Indian cricket team? Or perhaps Sachin Tendulkar or PM Modi would have applied. No, why would they?
After the excitement of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, all eyes are on the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. But the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) faces an unexpected challenge: selecting the Indian men’s cricket team’s head coach.
3700 Fake Applicants Use Names Of Shah Rukh Khan, PM Modi And Other Celebs To Apply
Reviewing applications received by the May 27 deadline, the BCCI made a concerning discovery. An estimated 3400 applications were fake, including those from prominent figures like politicians Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, celebrities like Shah Rukh Khan, and cricketing icons Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virender Sehwag.
This isn’t the first time the BCCI has dealt with such a problem. Similar issues arose last year, indicating a vulnerability in the online application process on the BCCI website. Recognising this flaw, the board is considering reforms to prevent future fraudulent applications.
A source within the BCCI shared insights with India Today, stating, “Since the application process is in the public domain, fans and many people can easily access the form. We may think of reducing all these things going forward. We may come up with some new processes of inviting applications which will rule out fake applications..”
Gautam Gambhir Among Top Contenders For The Role
Amidst scrutiny, Gautam Gambhir emerges as a top contender. The mentor of IPL 2024 champions KKR, Gambhir is a frontrunner for the role. However, stiff competition remains, with former Australian cricketers Justin Langer and Ricky Ponting withdrawing their interest.
With current head coach Rahul Dravid set to depart after the T20 World Cup, the search for his successor intensifies. While Gambhir is a strong candidate, alternatives like VVS Laxman, Anil Kumble, and Ravi Shastri are also considered.
Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan, celebrating KKR’s IPL win, faced a health scare, leading to hospitalisation in Gujarat due to heatstroke.
Looking ahead, the Bollywood icon plans to start filming his next project, King, in July 2024, amidst his cricket team’s success.
