Superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who is adored for his on-screen magic, is also making waves off-screen with his charitable efforts through the Meer Foundation. Recently, there has been a major breakthrough for this noble cause.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has granted the Meer Foundation a five-year Foreign Contribution Registration Act (FCRA) license, as reported by The Economic Times.
Shah Rukh Khan-Owned Meer Foundation Can Now Receive Foreign Grants
This milestone allows the Meer Foundation to receive foreign grants, opening doors for Overseas Citizens of India to contribute. However, it’s important to note that this license doesn’t apply to Non-resident Indians (NRIs) holding Indian passports.
Established in 2013 by Shah Rukh Khan, the Meer Foundation is dedicated to supporting survivors of acid attacks. The FCRA license, granted on May 31, 2024, marks a significant achievement.
According to MHA guidelines, NGOs can apply for FCRA licenses for various purposes, including cultural, economic, educational, religious, or social programs.
SRK’s Office Was Transformed Into Quarantine Centre & ICU During COVID -19 Pandemic
Amidst the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020, the Meer Foundation stepped up its social responsibility. Shah Rukh Khan’s Khar office was transformed into a quarantine centre for asymptomatic patients, later converted into an intensive care unit (ICU) for critical cases. The foundation managed security, housekeeping, and other essential services to ensure a comfortable environment for patients.
During this challenging time, the NGO partnered with Ek Saath – The Earth Foundation and the Roti Foundation to address food shortages. Over 5,500 families received daily food supplies for a month, hospitals and households in need received freshly cooked meals, and 300,000 meal kits were distributed to the underprivileged and daily wage workers in Maharashtra.
Additionally, 2,500 daily wage workers in Delhi received essential groceries for a month. In 2018, on International Day of Persons With Disability, Shah Rukh Khan donated 50 wheelchairs through the Meer Foundation as a gesture of solidarity.
