The much-awaited biopic on legendary actress Madhubala has hit an unexpected delay. Sony Pictures announced the film nearly two years ago, but there has been no progress. Frustrated by the long wait, Madhubala’s younger sister, Madhur Brij Bhushan, has taken legal action against the studio.
With Madhubala’s 92nd birth anniversary coming up on February 14, Madhur shared her disappointment. “It’s an extremely special day for me and my family. The day stands for the celebration of my sister’s timeless charm and beauty.” The lack of progress on the biopic has dampened her spirits.
Madhubala Biopic Stuck In Limbo
The project was first announced in March 2024 and created huge excitement. Fans were eager to see a tribute to the iconic actress, known for her beauty and charm in the 1950s and 60s. However, updates about the film became rare as time passed.
Talking about the same, Madhur said, “It’s been close to two years since we signed the agreement. We are in 2025 now, and I am still anxiously waiting for some progress or even an update on the start date of the film.” She also shared that despite several emails and follow-ups with Sony Pictures, she has received only ‘vague’ responses.
Late Actress’ Sister Takes Legal Action Against Sony Pictures
Feeling ignored, Madhur and her legal team have now sent an official notice to the studio. “I had no choice but to take legal steps. I am a senior citizen, and this endless wait is extremely disheartening. However, along with my partners, I will do whatever it takes to ensure that this film is made,” she said.
Madhur signed the agreement with Sony Pictures in May 2023 and expected a smooth production process. However, she now questions the studio’s commitment. “Do you even want to make this film? Are you serious about the biopic? What is your plan? Please give some clarity,” she urged.
Madur UPSET As Her Plans To Pay Tribute To Madhubala Have Been Disrupted
As Madhubala’s birth anniversary approaches, Madhur is upset that her plans to honour her sister’s legacy have been disrupted. “I wanted to install her statue, do something for an old-age home, and set up a music school. But this delay has thrown everything off track,” she said.
Despite this, Madhur made it clear that no filmmaker, except those authorised by her family, can create any content about Madhubala’s life. She said, “This is our exclusive emotional right. I request everyone to not attempt anything distasteful.”
Madhur also addressed misleading media reports about her. “Some articles paint me in a bad light without knowing the truth. It’s upsetting. I have worked hard all my life and built a career in music, dubbing, and advertising. I am a self-made person,” she said.
The film was supposed to be directed by Darlings (2022) filmmaker Jasmeet K. Reen. However, with no progress, both fans and Madhubala’s family are left uncertain. Madhur, though, is not giving up. “I just hope and pray that this film gets made soon. It will be a true tribute to my sister’s life,” she concluded.
For now, the decision is in Sony Pictures’ hands. Fans and the industry await their response.
